How do I know if I have nonenal?
Nonenal is a natural compound made when skin oils oxidise, and it has a greasy, musty smell. It usually starts after forty, as the skin’s own antioxidants decline. The catch: you often cannot smell it on yourself. Your nose adapts to it within minutes. Other people’s noses do not.
Why is it expensive?
- Real fermented kakishibu. Cheap bars use persimmon fragrance, or a splash of juice. Nenali is built on the concentrated tannin — the part that binds to nonenal and carries it away.
- The traditional Japanese method. Kakishibu has been fermented and used in Japan for centuries, long before anyone gave the smell a chemical name.
- Slow fermentation. Unripe persimmons are pressed and left to ferment for months before a single bar is poured. Months, not minutes.
- Seasonal. Persimmons ripen once a year, in autumn. One harvest makes a limited number of bars, so every batch is small.
- Still less than your morning coffee. Around half a dollar a day — thirty-two cents on the ten-pack — for a problem you actually want gone.
How long does it last?
About four weeks per bar with daily use. Each bar is a full 100 g, not a travel size. Keep it on a draining dish, out of standing water, and it lasts longer.

The real reason

After forty, the oil your skin makes starts to change. As it oxidises it gives off a compound called 2-nonenal. That is the smell.
Think of a greasy pan. Water runs straight over it and the grease stays. Ordinary soap does the same thing with this oil. That is why showering more often changes nothing.

How to use it
Turn the shower into a reset.
Lather
On wet skin, work the bar into a lather and take it to neck, chest, back and under-bust.
Leave it
Twenty or thirty seconds before rinsing. Contact time is what does the work.
Rinse and stop
Pat dry. Nothing layered on top. For the underarms there is the Daily Deodorant, on the same base.

Before you decide.
Is the bar a deodorant? Do I stop using mine?
The bar is a cleanser, not a deodorant. It is formulated for 2-nonenal, which forms when skin lipids oxidise — a different molecule from the bacterial odour a deodorant addresses. For the underarms we make a deodorant on the same base. If you use an antiperspirant for wetness, keep it: that is a third thing again.
I shower every day. Why isn’t that enough?
Because it is not a cleanliness problem. The skin keeps producing it, so it returns between washes. Washing harder or more often does not change the chemistry.
Bar, wash or both?
Same base, same job. The bar gives more contact time and lasts longer; the wash is easier if you find a bar awkward. Plenty of people alternate, which is why the set has both.
Will it dry out my skin?
It is formulated for daily use on mature skin, which is drier than the skin these products are usually designed for. If you are prone to reactions, patch test on the inner arm first and stop if irritation appears.
How strong is the scent?
Deliberately low. A clean note from the persimmon and green tea, and very little else. If it needed a heavy fragrance it would not be working.
