Almost nobody notices this on themselves first. They notice it on fabric.

A shirt collar in the evening. A pillowcase in the morning. The inside of a coat that has hung in the hall all week. Something is there that was not there ten years ago, and washing more does not seem to be the answer — which is the part that quietly bothers people, because we are all raised to believe that washing more is always the answer.

It is not your imagination and it is not your hygiene. It is a specific compound, it has a name, and someone went to the trouble of finding it.

The chemistry, without the jargon

Think of a bottle of oil
left open on the counter.

Your skin makes its own oil. Among the fats in it is a family called omega-7 — and like any unsaturated fat, it reacts with oxygen.

Leave good olive oil open for a few weeks and it smells different. Not spoiled exactly: flatter, waxier, faintly like an old book. Nobody added anything. Oxygen simply got at the fat and rearranged it. That is oxidation, and on skin it is the same reaction with the same result — a new molecule that was not there before.

On younger skin this barely registers. There is less of the fat that oxidises easily, antioxidant defences run higher, and the little that forms gets cleared. From around forty the balance tips both ways at once: more of the raw material, less of what used to keep it in check.

What comes out of that reaction is called 2-nonenal. The people who have measured it describe it as greasy and faintly grassy. It is not a strong smell. It is a persistent one — and unlike sweat, it does not wait for you to be warm or nervous or running for a train. It is simply there, quietly, all day.

Someone went looking,
and found it.

A team of Japanese researchers led by Shinichiro Haze set out to answer a question that sounds almost too plain to put in a laboratory: does older skin smell different, and if so, which molecule is doing it?

They collected what evaporates off human skin across a wide range of ages and compared the samples. One compound showed up in the older group and was essentially absent from the younger one. It rose steadily with age. It was 2-nonenal, and until that paper nobody had put a name to it.

That is the whole foundation of this category. Not folklore, not an ancient secret, not a story invented to sell a bar of soap. One study, one measurement, one molecule — and a lot of people who had been quietly wondering whether they were imagining things.

Bacteria, feeding on sweat

Sweat itself is close to odourless. The smell comes from bacteria breaking it down, mostly under the arms, and a deodorant works by making that a worse place for them to live.
